Why this build?

Ubuntu 24.04 ships Blender 4.0.2, now over two years old and missing two major release cycles of improvements. This build provides Blender 5.0.1 (December 2025), a significant upgrade:

• 4.0 → 5.0 — two full major versions ahead of the distro package, with hundreds of new features and fixes
• Geometry Nodes improvements — bake to mesh, simulation zones, menu zones, and new node types
• Cycles X rendering — continued performance improvements, light linking, and ray portal BSDF
• EEVEE Next — completely rewritten real-time renderer with ray tracing, volumetrics, and ambient occlusion
• Extensions platform — new add-on system replacing the legacy add-on manager with drag-and-drop .zip install
• Grease Pencil v3 — rewritten from scratch as a proper object type with layer groups and modern architecture
• USD and MaterialX — improved Universal Scene Description I/O with MaterialX shader support
• Sculpt mode improvements — new brushes, auto-face sets, gesture tools, and performance gains
• Bundled precompiled libraries — VFX Reference Platform compatible (OpenEXR, OCIO, OIIO, OpenVDB, Embree, OSL, Alembic, MaterialX)
